Statement

This is a land of contrasts, a border territory inhabited by a population of 485.000 people, composed of Italians, Germans and Ladins, plus immigrants from other countries. We all are, or consider ourselves, a minority.

It is a complex reality, that of Alto Adige: rich and highly controlled, and steep, like its mountains.

Language here unites or divides people. Here one is confronted with being either “South Tyrolean”(i.e. German mother tongue) or “Altoatesino”(Italian mother tongue), or a bit of  both. Italians? May be, but never fully so. We are Italians and Germans with one foot in Mid-Europe.

This town is a metaphor, a bridge uniting two main cultures (and perhaps many more).  We are in the middle of this bridge and we can choose to take a step south or north, but we we’ll always be something “different”.

What is it that keeps us together? Paradoxically, we all share  the common feeling of being  strangers  in our native country: I feel that  nobody  can call this place “ home” without a feeling of estrangement ,so  everyone creates their own particular “homeland”. Everybody is “at home” in a very different way.
