Italy, during the sixties, was a place where it was possible to fulfil your own dreams.
Calabria is a land where miracles don't happen but are expected to: that explains the strong religious atmosphere enveloping the whole region but, at the same time, also the sort of apathy hitting everyone, young people as well as senior citizens while they wait, for instance, for jobs - the Government should provide them. Miracles here are based on ancient beliefs where sacred (religion) and profane (politics) mix continuously, with no Italian miracle as a result, though. This is not a place for miracles, then: it's still waiting for them.

The building industry has often boosted the economy in Italy. After the killing landslide that hit Sarno in 1983, developers have built more and more houses which have taken up extensive stretches of the countryside in that area. This increase in house building was not caused by an increase in the population growth but rather by a relocation of those people affected by that natural disaster in farmed land.
In fact, most of the new settlements have been built illegally in all the area surrounding Sarno. This has brought about an unregulated development of sprawling villages which now coexist with the more traditional farms and colonial houses that once characterized this landscape.
During the last years, the need to build new homes at all costs has created a chaotic outskirt resembling, on a smaller scale, the suburban areas that were built in Italy by the end of WW2.

Savona, November 2010. The Rock of "La Madonnetta" is the symbol of the Margonara coastline between Albisola Marina and Savona. This part of the Riviera, among the few ones still preserved from construction sites and concrete, is in danger due to a huge real estate and harbor project. The "Italian miracle" would happen if La Madonnetta, standing on top of the rock, could stop the project before works begin.

Silvio Berlusconi aka "The Cavalier" was born in Milan on the 29th September, 1936 in a low middle-class family: his father was an employee and his mother ,"mamma Rosa", a housewife.
The power of this 74 year old, as everyone calls him, "self made man" (his first "miracle") has grown and grown starting from the end of WWII, until he reached the leadership of the country in spite of a, to say the least, questionable ("miracle" number two) career.
Scandals from these last few years notwithstanding, nothing seems to gets in his way ("miracle" number three), as he reigns on in the miracle country.

The “Fontana leggera” in Capo D’Orlando, near Messina. December 31, 2011 is the last day for Italian municipalities to renounce at least 40% of their participation as stakeholders in water companies. On December 4, 2010 the so called "People of the Water" movement protested in Rome and simultaneously in other Italian cities, presenting a 1.4 milion signatures petition against the Ronchi Law, claiming it amounts to privatization of water.
On July 6, 2010, the borough of Capo D'Orlando, after a collaboration with the Egologos Research Laboratories, presented the first public, free, controlled and refrigerated fountain in the South of the country. It offers both still and sparkling water. It's been called “Fontana leggera” ("light fountain") because it helps families spending less money, also reducing the amount of waste and valorizing an essential resource.
This is my version of the Italian Miracle: against all the difficulties (laws against women and women's bodies, no attention towards the most fragile people in society like children and third age, no certainty about work, the terrible political situation, a neverending mortgage of 30 or more years) people my age still have the courage to give birth to babies and build a family, hoping for a better future.

Alumix, via Volta 11, in Bolzano.
The names of this factory especially reflect the history of Italian industries during the economic boom. Initially, "Alumix" and "Aluminia" described its being an Italian reality. When the crisis hits, the name becomes "Alcoa", as the factory is bought by an American firm. The factory ended its life by becoming "Sapa", owned by the Swedish. It has been recently acquired by the government and is now used to host cultural events. This building can tell many stories: the stories of many Italians who moved to Alto Adige looking for a job; the stories of the German population who was forced to "Italianise"; and again, the stories of industrialization of a small mountain region where factories were almost nonexistent. During the economic boom this same building gave a job to a great amount of workers, reaching in the Sixties a level of 50,000 tons of asbestos. Having been recognized as a monumental site of Industrial Archeology, it will be transformed into a technology park devoted to innovation.
